How Can I Protect Plastic on My Bike?

motorcycle, protect plasticProtecting your motorcycle is an important thing and something we all feel compelled to do.  You might want to protect your bike to preserve its value, to look good while you’re out riding, or just because it’s the right thing to do.  No matter why you want to protect your bike, at the end of the day it is tricky business.  It isn’t like washing a car where you can throw some soap in a bucket.  Cleaning your motorcycle requires paying attention to all the different surfaces and using the right cleaners and protective coatings.  This is especially true when it comes to learning how to protect plastic.

If you’re interested in protecting other surfaces on your bike, we would recommend checking out our articles on how to wash your motorcycle and degreasing your engine.

When it comes to making sure you protect plastic parts on your bike it’s important to be sure that you understand what we’re talking about.  There are two kinds of plastic parts on your bike that you need to care for; painted plastic and natural plastic.

Painted plastic would be anything like the plastic fairings on a sportbike or the front fairing on your cruiser.  When it comes to painted plastic you should be focusing on maintaining the paint more than the plastic.  The paint will protect the plastic from any UV damage so keeping the paint in good shape will keep the plastic like new.  Motorcycles are painted with very similar paint to automotive paint so the best way to protect it is to keep it clean and keep it waxed.  We recommend waxing painted surfaces at least twice a year with good quality carnauba wax.  If your paint has gotten worn or faded beyond repair, try PJ1’s line of paints to restore your painted plastic to its former glory.

When it comes to unpainted plastic it’s important to protect that as well to avoid dull colors or cracking.  Unpainted plastic uses pigments in the production process to color the plastic.  These pigments, like anything, are susceptible to damage from UV light.  Besides losing its color, unpainted plastic can get brittle and crack from exposure to the sun and the elements.
